We're still enjoying the Isle of Coconuts, Ko Samui in Thailand!
A couple of days ago, the ocean did a rather strange thing. (I get a little nervous when the ocean does strange things post-tsunami, but all was well.) The tide receded hundreds of feet -- much further than normal. We walked out maybe 150 feet and were only calf-deep -- and others went out much further. The water, normally warm, was actually hot in some places. We lay down or floated in the bathwater -warm water saltwater and floated in and out of jacuzzi-hot and somewhat-cold currents. Can anybody explain this? It was fun but odd. The water was beautiful, but today it is cloudy and dirty. All very interesting...
It was Thai New Year and the Thai (at least here on Ko Samui) have a fun way of celebrating. Large barrels of water are loaded on the back of pick-up trucks and then people pack in around them to throw buckets of water on other vehicles and pedestrians as the driver goes up and down the highway. Those without vehicles set up road-side water stations to do the same. Everyone smiles and laughs and cools down a bit from the Samui heat!
Yesterday we spent the day in Angthong National Marine Park. After a 2 1/2 hour boat ride, we reached a big rock (not really large enough to call an island). Tom and several others went diving and a few of us went snorkeling. (I'm doing better physically and decided to try it. I'm hurting today, but the fact that I could snorkel for even a little while signals great improvement. "A massage a day keeps the doctor away" is my new saying, and with massages starting at $5, it's worth every penny.) Tom loves diving and I was happy to get into the ocean. Beautiful, colorful fish and coral! (Did any of you see the movie The Beach? A lot of the same scenery.)
Believe it or not, we have attended two cooking classes and are scheduled for a third. The first was "Raw Foods," the second was "Tofu Dishes," and next Wednesday is "Thai Cooking." We love Thai food and after the fast (Did I tell you about that? We spent 7-days doing a cleansing fast: no solid foods -- just lots of icky-tasting detox drinks; colemas -- if you don't know, don't ask; and a fair share of laughter with a lot of other health-minded types) -- well, after the fast, we want to cook and eat well. When we get back and settled, you're all invited to Texas for some super-healthy cooking!
Tom is still working away at his degree... He's on the next computer inputting his homework. He'll finish the A.A. June 4 and is starting on his B.S. (through another online university) before he even finishes the A.A. He's going to be very busy!
Hope you are all doing well. We love hearing updates from you -- thanks to those who have sent them and a hint, hint to those who haven't!
If you're going to be in Southern CA in May, please join us for dinner May 20th. We'll be back there to get our student visas for the summer and fall semesters in Spain (Salamanca and the Canary Islands).
BTW, Lucy (Oaxaca) is en route to Puebla right now for more tests, so please pray that the doctors would really be able to help her.
