Tom and Ronit Ricoy
Ricoy Update No. 1
Hi All,
We're nearly 3 weeks into our trip but we haven't truly started the international year yet; here is our update! (Based on past experience, I imagine the updates will get more interesting once we hit Guatemala. )
First, a praise: We finally found a travel insurance that will accept me (after I was denied twice due to pre-existing conditions and the Guatemala accident injuries).
We don't want to spam anyone, so we're going to ask that you E-MAIL US IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO RECEIVE OUR UPDATES/PRAYER REQUESTS.
We scheduled in family time before starting our international travel year, and we've been blessed to enjoy time with Tom's family and my relatives and look forward to seeing my parents later this week.
We packed up our apartment and our lives and left on Oct 28 (me)/Oct 30 (Tom) to visit my grandma and aunt/uncle/cousins. I was able to stay with my grandmother for 6 days, and this was very special, especially since she is 82 and in the beginning stages of Alzeimer's.
We came back to Southern CA very briefly and stayed with Tom's Dad, step-mom, and family -- celebrating early Christmas/birthdays with them and continuing our packing (in the last-minute craziness, we'd just filled several bags/boxes and my car in order to get out of our apartment!).
Then it was off to Spain (!!!), where we followed up with contacts and made some new contacts in order to arrange an affordable and productive long-term stay there next year. We stayed some days in Tarifa, where we could see both Africa and Gibraltar. The place is famous for windsurfing and kites, but it wasn't as windy as one might imagine. Spain would have been more enjoyable had it not been for health issues. We need continued prayer for our Guatemala car accident (June 2004) injuries as we found that travel really aggravated them and caused me a 3-day debilitating headache (back/neck issues). As we were supposed to be leaving Spain, Tom came down with a virus that landed him in the hospital and extended our stay by a day, but thankfully he has recovered.
Now we are back in CA briefly again, celebrating (EARLY) Tom's 30th birthday (Nov 23)/my 34th birthday (Dec 8)/Thanksgiving/Christmas (all in 3 days!) with Tom's Mom, step-dad, brother, and grandparents and going to last-minute appointments before we're leave CA for good.
Thursday morning it's off to Austin, TX, en route to Guatemala. We plan to move to Austin after our travels and recently bought land there (and we invite all our friends to come visit and think of re-locating -- 45K gets you an acre); we would like to build a house there in a few years. My parents are going to meet us there on Thursday, so we'll do all our family celebrations with them in Austin.
From Austin, we continue to Guatemala! That's where we'll send our next update from, but a preview: volunteer work, Spanish study, natural health treatments. We'll mostly be in San Marcos, La Laguna -- the place I volunteered 2001 and made several other (1999 - 2004) trips and where Madeleine Schamehorn is currently volunteering. (And we are looking for an English teacher to begin January 2005, if you know of anyone who's interested!)
So that's the update! Let us know if you want to be kept in the loop as we travel to Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, Israel, Thailand -- and wherever else (probably adjoining countries in the developint world)! We've got volunteer projects planned in Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Israel, study planned in Guatemala, Spain, Switzerland and Israel, hopefully work and study in Spain -- and we know that a whole lot of unplanned and beautiful experiences will come our way.
We would LOVE to see some of you during the year, so we will do our best to tempt you into international travel!
We would also appreciate hearing from you and getting updates on your lives and would love to keep in touch across the miles!
